Ogni materiale si sporca in modo diverso e va pulito in modo diverso: il detergente sbagliato può fissare la macchia o opacizzare la pelle. Per la pelle liscia servono latti e schiume delicate; per il camoscio spazzole e gomme; per le sneaker in tela shampoo dedicati. Gli aloni d'acqua e le macchie di grasso hanno smacchiatori specifici, da usare prima che lo sporco penetri nelle fibre. La pulizia è però solo il primo passo: una volta rimosso lo sporco conviene nutrire e lucidare la pelle per restituirle morbidezza, e poi proteggerla da acqua e sporco così da rendere più facile la pulizia successiva.
